“Before joining this team, I never imagined myself working at a Western New York law firm. But the work here is at the highest level. We’ve created a unique firm—with amazing work, people, and flexibility. Sometimes, I pinch myself to make sure this incredible opportunity to grow both my career and my family is real.”
Sheila Baynes, Counsel at Aurelian, and former U.S. Department of Justice Honors Program Trial Attorney, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit Clerk, and U.S. Department of Justice Office of Legal Counsel Clerk
“That mentorship kicked off my entire career—from a Second Circuit clerkship to a partnership at Sullivan & Cromwell.”
Ann-Elizabeth Ostrager, Partner, Sullivan & Cromwell LLP,
and former U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit Clerk
“From day one, this team cheered on my dream of teaching law. Not only was the work challenging, but it was also important. A case we litigated there is in a casebook I teach from here.”
Prof. Gregory Dickinson, University of Nebraska College of Law,
and former U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit Clerk
Testimonials relate to experiences working for Aurelian attorneys prior to their founding of Aurelian Law.
-
Aurelian has the highest standards. We are looking for lawyers passionate about clients and the law. We value not just excellent grades but also strong writing samples, references, and clerkship experience.
We are recruiting future leaders.
-
Aurelian offers associates immediate access to the most challenging and most interesting aspects of legal practice: high-stakes litigation and investigations. We guide and support clients through immensely difficult situations. We advance important pro bono and public interest cases that garner national attention. To do all this, we draw on a diverse set of skills, including breakthrough detective work, multifaceted client crisis counseling, complex government negotiation, dramatic courtroom presentation, and the creative development of novel legal arguments before trial and appellate courts.
Associates here will learn at a pace unlikely to be matched elsewhere.
-
At Aurelian, we believe the law is an apprenticeship. We hire lawyers poised to succeed here over the course of their careers, and we mentor them. Lawyers who have worked for our partners have gone onto coveted clerkships, including at the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Second Circuit and D.C. Circuit, and into public service, including at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. Others are partners in AmLaw100 firms, leading government legal departments, working as in-house counsel, or advancing justice through nonprofits.
We support our associates’ ambitions and celebrate their successes, wherever their dreams take them. -
Superior lawyers deserve superior compensation. Associates at Aurelian are paid well above market rates in Western New York, along with top-notch benefits, enabling them to achieve financial success and to focus on what matters in their lives and for our clients.
We aim to recruit lawyers who would otherwise be tempted to head to New York City or similarly high cost-of-living markets.
-
There are better ways to practice law. At BigLaw, associates often spend years on document review, far from the senior partners who are advising clients and creating strategy. At Aurelian, associates work side-by-side with our most senior lawyers. They engage in challenging and meaningful work; their voices matter; and they learn from a team passionate about the law and serving clients.
There are also better ways to live. Aurelian demands hard work but also treats lawyers as people with lives and interests beyond the office. The firm supports lawyers and their families—whether that’s the many kids we have running around, significant others, or extended families. We have each other’s backs. Western New York offers attorneys an opportunity to flourish in a lower-cost environment where thriving communities provide a high quality of life. And Aurelian offers its lawyers richer compensation, top-notch benefits, and unmatched flexibility to enjoy that life.
At Aurelian, you can experience the best the law has to offer—at the highest level of practice—while enjoying your life, too.
